ARTIST'
CURRICULUM VITAE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1933
in Odessa on the Black Sea, Meshberg began his study of art at the age
of thirteen. He completed his studies at the Odessa Art College and in
1960 was accepted as a member of the Union of Soviet Artists. Hailed as
among the most accomplished young Soviet artists of the 1960's, his paintings
were collected by Russian and Western museums, including the Pushkin Museum
and the Tretiakov Gallery, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum, and the
Museum of Contemporary Russian Art.
Meshberg's
experimentation with abstraction in the 1970s precipitated his fall from
favor with the ruling party of the former Soviet Union. He emigrated from
the USSR in 1973 and now divides his time between Paris and New York.
Inspired and influenced by his new surroundings, the New York Times notes,
"Mr. Meshberg has painted his way into American life".
