ARTIST' CURRICULUM VITAE

  • Gregory Perkel was born on May 3, 1939 in Vinnitsa, a city situated in the territory of the former USSR and presently in the independent state of Ukraine.
  • From 1946 he lived, studied and worked in Moscow. In 1964 he graduated from the fine arts-graphics department of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute.
  • In the first year after graduating from the Institute, he learned to make a living in different fields of commercial art, doing illustrations for magazines and books, movie posters, theater decorations and costumes, cartoons and much more.
  • The beginning of his creative work he attributes to spring of 1966. From that point, life and creative work of the artist could be separated into two large periods: Before the immigration to the United States and after immigration.

FIRST PERIOD

The Beginning 1966-1969

  • The creation a body of work on various themes, in gouache, watercolor and oil on canvas technics.

In Search of Roots 1970-1972

  • Worked on an album of lithographs, based on the theme of Jewish Folklore.

Formation of Artistic and Spiritual Principals 1973-1977

  • Created an album of lithographs based on novel by L.N. Tolstoy "War and Peace" and a collection of lithographs titled "Parables".

Doubts and Search 1975-1977

  • Created a body of work in variety of mediums, which reflect a spiritual state of the artist prior to his departure from the USSR.

 

SECOND PERIOD

  • On October 18, 1977 the artist with his family arrived in New York.

"Totems, Parts and Obsession" 1978-1980

  • Creation of an istallation in which the ideas developed by the artist, prior to his immigration, were crystallized and also during this particular period two graphic series were created called: "Women and Ages" and "Personages".

"Genealogical Roots" 1981-1983

  • A group of four triptychs, in the creation of which the artist tried to realize his place in time and space.

"Nostalgic Bouquets" 1983

  • A series of eight medium size paintings, representing short period of disillusionment, depression and abrupt change from one style to another.

"Holiday Purim" 1983

  • Creation of conglomerate (Compositional principal is based on individual elements: canvases, collages, sculptures joined together on the wall in one unit) on the theme of Jewish Folklore. For the artist this work presented to be the start of a new vision and a new style.

In the Stream American Culture 1984-1989

  • The artist completely breaks all ties with the ideas and aesthetics of the past and begins a new "American" period of his creative work, which reflects life and culture surrounding him. During this time fourteen conglomerates and three graphic series and about dozen paintings were created.

Discovery of Corporaria Land 1989-1993

  • The artist discontinues creating "works of art" and entirely devotes himself to the research of the new space revealed to him called "Corporaria Land". To this day he has researched, recorded and prepared four aisles for exhibition:
  • 1. Trade, Pray and Relax Over the Coffin Table.

    2. Candlelight Dinner in a Time of the Framed Culture.
